Kinesio Taping

Chiropractic Morrison Chiropractic Kinesio

Kinesio taping is becoming very popular in our Ellicott City and Clarksville offices.  We’ve all seen it. The guy or girl in the gym or running outdoors with tape running in all directions? Maybe you’ve seen them across the shoulder, around a kneecap, or on the back of the calves and wondered what is that stuff? It’s certainly not the ace wrap you grew up with when you were injured. Kinesio taping (KT)is a specialized form of taping that has been used in various chiropractic, physical therapy, medical, and orthopedic clinics for many years. Not only has kinesio taping been utilized in a variety of health care facilities, world class athletes including Lance Armstrong, David Beckham, Kerri Walsh, and Serena Williams have also recognized its benefits.

Purpose of Kinesio Taping

Kinesio tape is used to relieve pain in muscles, joints and/or ligaments. It may reduce pain, swelling, increases mobility and enhance recovery. KT is  used to treat many common muscle and joint related issues including sprains, muscle strains, joint dysfunction, and tendonitis. KT provides mild support and pain relief during and/or after an activity. Range of motion is not limited. KT can provide therapeutic relief to a variety of common conditions.

How can Kinesio taping help you?

Our chiropractors at Morrison Chiropractic have been properly trained in the application of kinesio tape to help support normal joint and muscle function.  Through the alleviation of the stress effecting the joints and musculature, pressure on blood and lymph vessels Is reduced.  As these systems begin to function better, inflammation and pain begin to decrease, thereby restoring normal function and mobility.  In contrast to traditional taping methods that are primarily utilized to reduce motion and stabilize the joint, kinesio taping is applied in such a way that doesn’t cause restriction of the underlying structures.

As mentioned above, kinesio taping has been used by several famous athletes, but it is more commonly used by individuals involved with manual labor, people undergoing rehabilitation, people with sports injuries and high school and college athletes. Some common conditions that have been shown to benefit from kinesio taping include:

  • Conditions causing muscular dysfunction
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Low back and neck pain
  • Shoulder problems
  • Knee problems
  • Patella dysfunctions
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Post surgery stabilization
  • Support for ankle sprains
  • Reduction of swelling
  • Tennis elbow
  • Whiplash injuries

If you are suffering from any of these conditions or are interested in obtaining more information regarding kinesio taping, please contact the Morrison Chiropractic team in Ellicott City or Clarksville.
